Trading online with the right broker
Once you have an idea of the type of online trader you plan to become, you need to select a broker to facilitate your trading online. There are many online brokerages to choose from and several factors to consider before making your decision, including:

How much money you plan to invest into trading online.
Most brokerage houses require traders to have a certain amount of money to open an account.
How frequently you plan to make trades in your account.
Are you going to buy one stock and hold on to it? If so, you'll need to make sure the brokerage caters to Position traders, and doesn't charge a fee for a lack of activity in your account. Alternately, if you're going to be executing lots of trades, you'll want lower transaction fees.
Any other services you may want
A few online trading sites let you buy and sell stocks, but don’t offer other services. Others offer more services, such as debit cards, mortgage loans and opportunities for other investments, such as bonds, futures and currencies.
Protecting yourself and your profits
One of the most important aspects of trading online is protecting your investments. With the birth of new trading technology also comes the opportunity for identity theft and investment fraud.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is a government organization that helps protect investors from being a victim of fraud or other financial setbacks. Keep in mind, however, that trading online offers no financial guarantees.

When you are entering sensitive information (your Date of Birth, Social Security Number, etc.) on a Web site, be sure you are on a secure connection. Secure online connections begin with https:// in their Web address.
Many brokerage firms claim to be easy to use when trading online, but some are easier than others. Be sure to get information from the firm to verify any advertised claims about their ease of use.
Even though online trading appears direct and instantaneous, you are not linked directly to the market through your home computer, and cannot instantly execute trades or cancel orders.
Get information from the brokerage firm about Web site outages, delays, and other interruptions that may affect your capability to trade. Make sure that the firm has an alternative way to execute trades (phone, fax, etc.). Be sure to keep these numbers near your computer.
Know how to contact a customer service representative if problems arise. Keep this information near your computer at all times.
Be sure that any information about transaction fees, sales commissions, and conditions that apply to any advertised discount on commissions is clear to you. Read the fine print.
Check the firm’s security and privacy policies. Find out if your name will be used for mailing lists by the firm or anyone else.
Contact your local securities division to verify the registration status and any disciplinary actions pending against the online brokerage firm.
